We must joyfully commit to serve each other in making an unprecedented and all encompassing shift in consciousness. What we have before us is the opportunity to create life on earth from a new consciousness that recognizes our eternal relationship with the Source of All That Is.

Jail Cell

Each and every one of us is an expression of God in physical form; despite the loveless acts we commit against ourselves or others, we can not change our divine nature. When I make this kind of statement, it seems as if I am always in the company of someone who asks if I would consider Hitler as an expression of God in physical form? Or what about Charlie Manson? Child molesters? And because I am an African American, I am routinely asked about slave owners.

My answer is this: When I know my true divine identity, I know and recognize the true divine identity of others. This knowing or recognition, because it is the truth, is not affected by what one says or does. Hilter's acts have no power to change his identity. This is a shift in consciousness, not on Hitler's part, but on mine. This is the shift required to build a new world--a new world that responds in radically different ways to those who commit what we call crimes ...

"You'll sit and listen to me for free? Without interrupting me, telling me what I should do, or judging me?"

"That's what my sign says."

"I'm sitting down! Are you sure you want to do this?"

A few years ago, I found myself having this dialogue with people on a regular basis, as I sat near Lake Merritt in Oakland, CA with a sign that offered "Free Listening. No Advice. No Judgments. No Interruptions."

"Free Listening. No Advice. No Judgments. No Interruptions."

After passersby read my sign, I often found them wanting assurance that I was not conducting an experiment, that I was not a therapist, nor was I trying to meet women. Rather, I was just happy to be present to those who wished to be heard.

After some consideration, people often walked away from me in disbelief of my authenticity, and for good reason. In my own best attempts to just take care of myself and those I care about, I've often forgotten the non-material part of taking care — presence and listening. My life can be so concerned with doing that I often forget to be with myself and others to allow and accept whatever is there to arise. In reflecting on my own life I can understand why others would find it hard to accept that I was just offering
