Kairos provides a superb musical education and the exhilarating experience of performing choral music as well as musical theater. Kairos choristers, girls and boys between the ages of 7 and 15 (with unchanged treble voices) learn to sing music from the finest traditions of classical, jazz, gospel, and world folk music, in their original languages.
Founded in 1990, the Choir has appeared in community, civic, and cultural events, including the Berkeley Repertory Theater, the Berkeley Opera, and the Hard Nut with the Mark Morris Dance Group. They have sung internationally, at Tivoli Gardens in Denmark, and concerts throughout Scandinavia. Representatives from our choir were delighted to make their first appearance in Tuscany, Italy in June of 2008.
Musical theatre and opera performances have included productions of Fiddler on the Roof, Pippi Longstocking, A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Snow Queen, Amahl and the Night Visitors, and The Musicians of Bremen, as well as many other original productions, composed especially for the children.
While Kairos kids learn about music, the choir also emphasizes self-expression and confidence, teamwork, and an appreciation of other languages and cultures. Choir families enjoy a rich community of diverse interests and a common enjoyment for children's natural wonder through hearing them sing. The choir has always had the gift of kids feeling "at home" and of making meaningful, enduring friendships.
